I have an IEP or other special circumstance, can I have more time to complete my online permit exam?
Basic Time Requirements
- You have 60 minutes to answer 50 questions. If you reach the time limit before finishing the exam, your test will be timed out and counted as a failed exam.
- You have 120 seconds to respond to a question. If you do not respond and time out of the test, it will be timed out and marked as a failure.
These are valid reasons to fail, per the State of Florida, so you will have to re-purchase and retake the exam if you fail due to these timeouts.
Are special accommodations available so I can have more time to take the permit exam?
Online Exam: No.
The presentation of the exam and technical requirements are completely controlled by the state of Florida. They do not allow the exam to be paused once started - the pause button is simply for anyone using the audio controls. Unfortunately, due to how the test is designed to meet all of the strict technical rules and protocols, adjustments can't be made for individual students who are taking it online.
In-Person Exam: Yes
While accommodations can't be made for online testing, there is much more flexibility in receiving special accommodations at the DMV. Typical accommodations that can be made include:
- Extra time
- An interpreter
- A quiet place to test
Please contact your local DMV and let them know that you will need accommodations when you schedule your appointment. Alternatively, you can call the Florida ADA/Title VI Coordinator at 850-617-3202 to have them help coordinate your test with the accommodations you need. The ADA Coordinator will typically not require documentation, but you may need to provide it if asked.

Tip: The ADA Coordinator was easily reachable by phone when we called to ask questions!
