What reason should I select for why I need the Adult Remedial Course?

If you have to complete the Ohio Adult Remedial course, you must select the correct reason in order for the BMV or court to accept the completion record. If you select the wrong reason, you will need to contact us for a replacement which involves paying a $10 fee and filling out a form.  If you need to get a replacement/corrected certificate, follow the instructions here: I need a new certificate (Ohio)

Options to Select

REASON 1 = Court ordered not for credit (this student was court ordered to take remedial course and will not receive the 2 point credit)
REASON 2 = This person is 19 years old or older but is taking the class because of a juvenile suspension that occurred before the age of 18.
REASON 3 = This course has been completed as a requirement for being eligible to retain or have my driver license returned due to being under the age of 21 and operating a vehicle with a prohibited level of alcohol in the blood, breath and urine as provided in R.C. 4511.19 (b) or a substantially similar municipal ordinance.
REASON 4 = I hereby apply to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to credit two points on my driving record in accordance with Section 4510.037 (c). I am aware that I am not entitled to a two point credit if on this date the total points assessed against my record is less than 2 points or more than 11 points.
REASON 5 = This course has been completed as a requirement for being eligible to retain or have my driver license returned due to a twelve point suspension. Section 4510.038 (A)

Example Circumstances

1. License has been suspended and you are trying to get it back.

SELECT REASON: This course has been completed as a requirement for being eligible to retain or have my driver license returned due to a twelve point suspension. Section 4510.038 (A)

2. You moved to another state and can't apply for a license in the new state because your license is in bad standing/suspended in Ohio.

SELECT REASON: This course has been completed as a requirement for being eligible to retain or have my driver license returned due to a twelve point suspension. Section 4510.038 (A)

3. Your license was suspended while you were in jail and you were told you need to take the course.

UNKNOWN -- YOU NEED MORE INFORMATION. You need to contact the BMV or Courthouse to determine the information for your specific case. In this case, it could be COURT-ORDERED (Reason 1) or it could be to be ELIGIBLE TO HAVE A LICENSE RETURNED (Reason 5) 

4. You received OVUAC conviction for driving under the influence while underage.

SELECT REASON: This course has been completed as a requirement for being eligible to retain or have my driver license returned due to being under the age of 21 and operating a vehicle with a prohibited level of alcohol in the blood, breath and urine as provided in R.C. 4511.19 (b) or a substantially similar municipal ordinance.

5. You received a license suspension when you were under 18 but did not resolve it. Now you are 19 or older. 

SELECT REASON: This person is 19 years old or older but is taking the class because of a juvenile suspension that occurred before the age of 18.

6. You were ordered by a judge to complete an Adult Remedial Course.

SELECT REASON: Court ordered not for credit (this student was court ordered to take remedial course and will not receive the 2 point credit)

7. You received a traffic ticket and want to get a point credit to reduce your chances of getting a 12 point suspension. 

SELECT REASON: I hereby apply to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to credit two points on my driving record in accordance with Section 4510.037 (c). I am aware that I am not entitled to a two point credit if on this date the total points assessed against my record is less than 2 points or more than 11 points.


8. The BMV told you that you need to take the Adult Remedial Course.

YOU MAY NEED MORE INFORMATION. If you are unsure or can't remember specifics about your situation, contact the BMV for clarification.
  1. Juvenile suspension, but now 19 or older
  2. Underage OVUAC conviction
  3. Too many traffic violations and received a 12 point suspension OR some other situation caused a license suspension
