1. Take your Permit Test and Get a Permit

2. Practice Driving

  1. Must have supervised driving practice
    1. Under 18: Minimum of 50 hours or supervised driving practice
      1. At least 15 hours at night
      2. At least 10 hours in moderate/heavy traffic
  2. List of restrictions on where and when you can drive
  3. Find a driving school to practice supervised driving

3. Take a Pre-licensing Course

  1. Classroom Pre-Licensing Course
    1. Taken through a driving school, high school, or college in person
    2. Must be at least 16 years old
    3. Given MV-278 Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate
  2. Distance Learning/Virtual Classroom Pre-Licensing Course
    1. Taken through a driving school, high school, or college ad taught live, in real-time, using distance using technology
    2. Must be at least 16 years old
    3. Given MV-278 Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate
  3. Online Pre-Licensing Course
    1. Taken through an online course provider, self-paced
    2. Must be at least 18 years old
    3. Completion sent electronically within 48 hours of completing the course

4. Schedule and Take Your Road Test

  1. Classroom or Distance Learning/Virtual Classroom Pre-licensing Certificate
    1. Need an MV-278 Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate
  2. Online Pre-Licensing Course
    1. A certificate is NOT required. Completion is given electronically within 48 hours of completing the course
  3. Under 18: Have to wait at least 6 months from the date you received your permit
