How do I get my Florida Learner's Permit and Drivers License
Required Course
All new drivers in Florida need to pass the TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse) Course.The TLSAE is also known as the Florida Drug and Alcohol Course. This course is required for ANY first time driver, regardless of age. You can take this course as long as you are at least 14 ½. See below for age requirements.

Teens Under 18
To qualify for a Learner’s Permit you must meet the following criteria:
- Be over 15 years of age
- Completed the TLSAE Course
- Completed the Learner's Permit Exam
- Have the consent of your parent or legal guardian
- Pass a vision and hearing test at the DMV

The earliest that you can be issued a learner's permit is 15 years old, as long as you have completed the TLSAE and Class E Knowledge Exam. (

Requirements to get your permit:
- At least 15 years old
- If under 18 years old, must have a signed/notarized Parental Consent Form
- Proof of Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course completion
- Pass a vision and hearing test – testing is conducted in the DMV service center
- Record of passing the Class E Knowledge Exam
- Documents to establish proof of identity, proof of social security number and proof of residential address.

Teens 16-17 years old
After having a learner's permit for one year, teens can upgrade their permit into an intermediate license.

- Requirements to get your Immediate License:
- Hold your Learner's Permit for 1 year
- You must have NO moving violation convictions for one year from when your learner’s license was issued OR you may have one moving violation as long as adjudication was withheld because you completed a Basic Driver Improvement Course. (Statute 322.05)
- Must have a parent, legal guardian or adult over 21 complete the Certification of Minor Driving Experience Form to show that 50 hours of driving experience has been completed, with at least 10 hours of night driving.
- Be able to pass a driving test at the DMV
Adults 18+ years old
With an intermediate license, you can drive without an adult. On your 18th birthday, the intermediate license will automatically update to a full Class E Driver's License. You do not need to go to the DMV to update it. Age | Step #1
