How do I get a 2 point credit on my license?
Get a 2-Point Credit on Your License
If you take a remedial course, this will give you a 2-point credit, but it will not remove any points from your driving record. This just means you will be able to accumulate 14 points instead of 12 before being placed under a BMV suspension. The points are not taken off when a class is taken. Here is more information on that
Section 4510.037-Ohio Revised Code | Ohio Laws.
A 2-Point Credit doesn't REMOVE points.
If you need points REMOVED because of professional work requirements:
- If your moving violation case is OPEN, you can ask the attorney or prosecutor's office if they could amend a record for the moving violation to NOT include points if you take a remedial course. This would be considered a Court-Ordered Remedial Course.
- If your case is CLOSED, there is nothing else that can be done and the points will stay, regardless of if you have risk of job loss or other severe consequence.
Typically, if you have received a notice about accumulating 6 points, your moving violation cases have already been CLOSED and there is nothing that can be done to remove the points by that time.
Who qualifies for the point credit?
- If you have under 12 points in a 2 year period, then the remedial class credits 2 points so the person can get 14 points before getting a license suspension.
- You must have at least 2 points on your license to qualify for taking the course to get credits.
- You have not taken the remedial course for the 2 point credit in the past 3 years.
- You have taken the remedial course for the 2 point credit less than 5 times in your lifetime.
How long does it take to get the credit on your license?
If you send your completion certificate to the BMV via fax or email direct, it usually takes 1-2 business days. If the certificate is taken to any Ohio BMV Agency, it usually takes an hour if brought in before 4pm on a weekday.
How long is the credit valid and how many times can I get credit on my license?
The credit is valid for three years and a driver may only take the course for this purpose five times in their lifetime. This means that you are only able to receive a 2-point credit to your license up to 5 times in your life and can only be done 3 years after the previous credit.
Note: The only way to have points removed from your driving record is by court order.
